The award-winning Easington Colliery Band, holders of the North of England champions title 2024 and famed for their performance with Mercury-prize winning legend, Sam Fender, on his Remember My Name track, will launch Newcastle’s Christmas Markets in true North East style.
The celebrations will begin at 9.50am with the band performing at Grey’s Monument, a fitting celebration for the markets, which showcase local talent and have a strong North East character. Over 84% of traders are from within a 20-mile radius of Newcastle.
In keeping with the local flavour, Newcastle Cathedral Choir will also provide a beautiful musical backdrop for the celebrations with performances of Christmas carols and festive songs that will set the mood for the official launch of Newcastle’s Christmas Markets on Saturday 15th November
Councillor Karen Kilgour, leader of Newcastle City Council, will do the honours at an official ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10am at Grey’s Monument to declare the markets officially open.
The markets are a true celebration of North East craftsmanship with festive food, and local produce, brought to the city by Newcastle City Council and NE1.
Newcastle’s Christmas Markets are bigger this year with new stalls added on Nelson Street, alongside Grainger Street, Grey Street, the Monument and at the Christmas Village at Old Eldon Square.
The schedule for the morning’s festive celebrations and launch event is:
- 9:50am: Performance by 2024 North East Champions, Easington Colliery Brass Band at Grey’s Monument
- 10am: Official ribbon cutting ceremony – Newcastle Council leader cutting the ribbon and declaring the Christmas Markets officially open
- 10:05am: Performance by Newcastle Cathedral Choir at Grey’s Monument
