NE1’s renowned Summer in the City programme returns this summer with over 75 free weekly events and a packed calendar of weekend takeovers. From adrenaline-junkies to cinemagoers, fitness enthusiasts to history buffs, NE1’s Summer in the City schedule truly offers something for everyone.

Since 2021, NE1 has curated a raft of experiences for people of the city and beyond to enjoy on the Quayside during the six-week holidays. This year the programme includes everything from relaxing yoga to high-energy HIIT sessions, and from children’s music workshops to cake decorating classes, there is something for all ages and abilities. These events are free to attend, and add extra vibrancy to the city, boost footfall and support local businesses.
Delivered in collaboration with a host of local companies, including Dance City, Seven Stories, The City Baths and many more, these interactive sessions offer a perfect opportunity to try something new and to get into the city. Spaces are limited and booking is essential, with the entire events schedule fully booked in under five days last year.
Kayaking on the Tyne
Outdoor adventure company, CBK Adventures, is again teaming up with NE1 to give people the chance to kayak for free on the Tyne between the iconic Tyne and Millennium Bridges. Held over two days with small group sessions, the kayaking tours offer some of the best views of the Quayside and the river Tyne.
Little Beethoven Music Sessions – Free music workshops for children.
Budding young musicians will get the chance to learn an instrument for free, when Little Beethoven delivers fun and engaging music classes on the Quayside, teaching youngsters how to play the keyboard and the ukulele.
Yoga
NE1 has teamed up with Yoga x Life to offer free sessions every Tuesday and Wednesday at 6pm – the ultimate way to unwind this summer with a picture-perfect backdrop. There will also be weekend classes on Saturdays at 9am, and a special family yoga session on Sunday 3rd August.
High-intensity interval training
(HIIT) classes will also be on offer, provided by expert instructors from The City Baths. 45-minute sessions will get you moving, whether you’re looking to get fit, or simply try something different with new people. Be sure to add it to your list. The team will also be running their popular Age Well sessions, designed for older adults to improve their balance, flexibility and overall fitness.
Let’s Party – Kids’ Clubs
For younger audiences, Let’s Party events will be hosting a series of kids’ clubs on Mondays during the school holidays. A Teddy Bear’s Picnic on Saturday, 21st July will launch the schedule in style. New for 2025, the team will also host a football-themed ‘Toon Takeover’ session perfect for little Newcastle United fans.
Tales on the Tyne
Every Wednesday at 11am throughout the six-week summer holidays, Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children’s Literature, will partner with NE1 to bring back the much-loved Tales on the Tyne. Families are encouraged to return each week for these highly interactive story-telling sessions, a fun and engaging way to spark a lifelong love of literature in young people.
Historic Guided Walking Tours on Saturdays
This year, NE1 is once again teaming up with Newcastle City Guides to deliver weekly Culture Tours every Saturday, exploring different corners of Newcastle with fascinating stories and expert insights into some of the city’s most famous landmarks.
Each 90-minute tour accommodates up to 30 people, led by two experienced and knowledgeable City Guides. With different starting points across the city, the schedule includes a city highlights tour, an in-depth look at the history of the iconic Guildhall, and the hugely popular Murderous Newcastle tour, which delves into the city’s grisly medieval past.
Commenting on the Summer in the City events programme, Rachel Fenwick, Head of Marketing and Events at NE1, said: “This year, we’ve packed the Summer in the City programme with as many different activities as possible to encourage even more people to visit Newcastle and enjoy everything the city has to offer. These events are designed to be inclusive, creative and fun, and a great excuse to try something new and get involved in the buzz of the city.”
Details of all Summer in the City events will be listed on the www.ne1summerinthecity.co.uk website, with bookings live from Tuesday, 1st July.
