Spring may have got off to a snowy start in Newcastle but planning for Summer is already well underway. NE1 Ltd, the business improvement district company for Newcastle City Centre is lining up a packed programme of events and activities for the city over the summer months.

Quayside Seaside

Thomas Cook Airlines Quayside Seaside

The first sign that summer is on its way can be seen on the banks of the Tyne with the opening of the ever-popular Thomas Cook Airlines Quayside Seaside, delivered by NE1.  The pop-up beach returned earlier than ever before on its usual site on the Quayside between the Tyne and the Millennium Bridges.  The beach will remain in place until the end of October, after the Great North Run in September.

This year, the pop up beach returns with all its usual elements; 350 tonnes of sand, 5 candy-striped beach huts, 50 deckchairs, climbing wall and palm trees but there is a fun, new addition in the shape of a playground area equipped with a slide and a fireman’s pole, which is sure to be a big hit with children!

Magic Weekend

19&20 May

14 teams, 7 matches over 2 days in one spectacular event.  Magic Weekend is returning to Newcastle and St James’ Park for the fourth year running.

The rugby festival returns to Newcastle and will be greeted by a loyal and growing fan base including thousands of travelling fans who come to Newcastle to enjoy the carnival like atmosphere Magic Weekend creates off the pitch and the rugby union action on it.

NE1 Ltd has worked closely with Newcastle City Council to secure the event for the city for another successful year.

Last year thousands of visiting fans travelled to Newcastle for the weekend event helping to contribute an £8.2 million economic boost to the local economy.

Newcastle Pride Festival

July 20 – 22

NE1 Ltd is proud headline sponsor, for the fifth year running, of Newcastle Pride which will be staged over the weekend of 20 – 22 July.  Hosted by the city’s LGBTQ++ community, Newcastle Pride is a major, family-friendly festival taking place at various venues across Newcastle.  One of the main elements of the event is a festival stage with various live bands, artists and a huge, 16,000-person capacity big top tent on the Town Moor in Newcastle.  This year’s headline acts include S Club and Alexandra Burke.

All events and activities within Pride aim to celebrate Newcastle’s rich diversity.   Last year Pride attracted over 73,000 people from across the North East, the UK and internationally.  The festival continues to grow in popularity year on year and is expected to be another record-breaking year with something for everyone to enjoy. Newcastle Pride also delivers a major economic boost to the city, last year’s event delivered a £9.2million boost to the local economy.

Screen on the Green

Another signature feature of NE1’s summertime events programme over the past few years has been NE1’s large outdoor screen.  NE1’s Screen on the Green is all set to return for another summer of free fun.  Located on Old Eldon Square, the screen is accompanied by NE1 deckchairs for people to sit back, relax and enjoy free, open-air screenings of movies, sports and news.

Throughout the summer, NE1 will run a series of classic films, family movie favourites as well as screening major sporting events from the World Cup to Wimbledon and Formula 1 racing.  This year, NE1 also plans to screen live Opera broadcast direct from the Royal Opera House, London.

NE1 Newcastle Motor Show

4th & 5th August

Back by popular demand, the NE1 Newcastle Motor Show will take to the streets of the city in August, for the North’s largest, free, open air, city based motor show.  Millions of pounds worth of the world’s most rare, exclusive and expensive cars will be exhibited on the city streets during the two-day festival style, motoring event.  The North’s leading car dealers will showcase the latest and most exclusive vehicles from a range of top motoring brands including Aston Martin, Infiniti, Tesla and others.  Interactive motoring themed activities will be included in the weekend programme together with live action demonstrations.

NE1 is still working on the details of the event which will be released as soon as they have been confirmed.
