Screen on the Green

MONDAY 23 JULY – 2 SEPTEMBER

From Monday 23 July, Old Eldon Square will again be home to NE1’s ever-popular summertime attraction, Screen on the Green.  For the 3rd year running, Old Eldon Square will house a giant screen for 6 weeks of free, open air movies. This summer NE1 is proud to unveil a packed schedule of 84 movies, 30% more than last year, including films fresh from the cinema, Oscar winners, classics and family favourites. The programme has something for everyone to enjoy, all free of charge and available to view open air, whatever the weather.

Who wouldn’t want to pull up a deckchair and hunker down for a free, open air screening of Beauty and the Beast, which kick starts NE1’s summer of movies on Monday 23 July.  This sing-a-long version of the blockbuster musical will get people in the mood for the summer ‘Screen on the Green’ schedule.

Other films expected to pack out the deckchairs at Old Eldon Square include:

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
The Avengers
Avengers: Age of Ultron
A Wrinkle in Time and Sherlock Gnomes

Throughout the 6 week movie run, films will be screened at 12pm and 6pm each weekday starting on Monday 23 July and running until Sunday 2 September. Weekend showings will be 12pm and 3pm.

This year parts of the schedule are also themed with ‘Throwback Thursdays’ featuring classics like The Goonies, Free Willy and The Parent Trap,as well as movie greats like Singin’ in the Rain.

Weekends will have a line- up of new releases with family favourites in the 12pm slot including Peter Rabbit and Coco as well as some of the latest releases in the 3pm afternoon slot.  Among the later shows are Wonder, Murder on the Orient Express and Black Panther.

To celebrate other events happening in NE1’s busy summertime events programme – the Screen on The Green films will be themed accordingly – so in the run up to NE1’s Newcastle Motor Show on the 4th and 5th August, Herbie: Love Bug and Cars 2 and 3 will all be screened, together with Fast & Furious 8 and Back to the Future in homage to the automotive extravaganza that will take over the rest of city over the weekend.

During NE1 Restaurant Week, the themes will have a distinctly foodie, restaurant flavour with Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Ratatouille and the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory all to whet people’s appetites for food and film.

The last weekend of the 6-week run will go out with a fanfare with some of the latest releases including Black Panther and Peter Rabbit.

Running alongside the open air movies this year will be a ‘Summer of Sport’ at Screen on the Green starting with Wimbledon tennis on 2 July.  Live action from the All England Club will be screened from Monday – Friday from 1 pm – 7pm and 12pm – 6pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Alongside Wimbledon, the big screen will also screen all the qualifying and live race from the Rolex British Grand Prix at Silverstone which takes place over the weekend of 5-8 July.

Ben Whitfield, Marketing and Events Manager at NE1 Ltd said:

“Screen on the Green is one of NE1’s most popular summertime activities and people are always delighted to see its return.  This year we’ve worked hard to build a schedule that we hope will appeal to a wide audience and we look forward to some good weather to accompany the fantastic film and sporting schedule.”
