5th Anniversary For NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week

In the long summer days when you can’t face another BBQ – Newcastle has a wonderful alternative in the shape of NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week.

From Monday August 8th to Sunday August 14th – over 90 of the city’s top restaurants are taking part in the 12th NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week, one of the major highlights in the city’s summer events calendar.

For seven days, diners can enjoy some of Newcastle’s finest restaurants for fixed price menus of £10 or £15 per person with many of the city’s newest restaurants joining the illustrious list of dining venues involved in the event’s 5th anniversary year.

Since its launch in 2011, 45 new restaurants have opened in Newcastle alone and many have immediately signed up to NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week.  Among the new recruits joining this August’s are Turtle Bay, Cabana, Riley’s Fish Shack, Fuego and Canteen and Cocktails.

NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week continues to grow in stature and popularity, this August another nine restaurants are joining the event.  Last August, over 35,000 people took advantage of NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week offer, equating to over £350,000 worth of extra business for participating restaurants.

Newcastle’s restaurant scene is one of the city’s largest growth sectors with more restaurants per person than anywhere else in the North of England, with Newcastle named ‘Most Restauranty City in the North’ in March 2016.

NE1 devised the Restaurant Week initiative to support and celebrate the restaurant industry taking inspiration from a similar scheme that operates successfully in New York City.   After discussing with some of the city’s top restaurateurs what could be done to support the industry at traditionally quiet times of the year, NE1 launched NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week.

13 of Newcastle’s top restaurants were involved in the inaugural event. Now over 90 restaurants are to take part and the weeks, one in January, the other in August, are a firm fixture in the city’s events calendar with over 60% of NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week customers visiting 2 or more restaurants during the week, with some dining out every night of the week.

NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week is such a successful formula, in part because it is simple and easy to communicate to consumers as well as being easily adopted by restaurants.

Chef and restaurateur Terry Laybourne, of 21 Hospitality Group was one of the founding restaurateurs who came up with the idea for the event and has supported every NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week since.  Terry said: “NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week has become a keenly anticipated calendar fixture among foodies and general diners; it’s a wonderful opportunity to go out and try several restaurants for a fraction of the normal cost. It’s great to see those passionate about food and hospitality working together to promote NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week.”

Newcastle to get Aston Martin preview at NE1 Newcastle Motor Show

Excitement is building and with less than a week before NE1’s Newcastle Motor Show, the UK’s largest open-air, city centre Motor Show event, gets underway leading dealerships are starting to announce the showstoppers they will be bringing to the festival.


Aston Martin, famed for being James Bond’s car of choice, and steeped in racing car history, is the first to reveal its jaw dropping line up.   The dealership has announced a line up that wouldn’t be out of place at the Geneva Motor Show.


Last year, the luxury brand was swamped by visitors clamouring to get a glimpse of its much sought after cars.


This year the crowds are again expected to swarm around the Aston Martin area sited at the top of Grey Street, a fitting venue for such a beautiful cluster of vehicles.


Aston Martin have announced that they will be bringing their brand new DB11 to the show, for only its second visit to the North East.  The only previous time the car was in the region was for the opening of the new purpose built multi million pound Aston Martin showroom at the Silverlink.


The car is the most powerful DB production model in the brand’s illustrious history, with a 600bhp twin turbocharged 5.2 litre V12 engine, and recently won ‘Production Car of the Year’ at the prestigious Salone dell’ Auto Torino after being unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. Capable of reaching speeds of 200mph, the DB11 is sure to be one of the most sought-after cars at the NE1 Newcastle Motor Show.


Joining it on the Aston plinth will be the exclusive Vantage GT8, of which only 150 will be produced, all for a starting price of £165,000, and all have already been sold.


Aston Martin road cars are shaped by the brand’s racing pedigree, but the new GT8 that will be on show at NE1 Newcastle Motor Show is a direct product of Aston’s racing heritage and all that has been learnt from the famous Le Mans race course.  The design team has focused on weight savings and aerodynamics to create a road car that is not only inspired by racing but that truly reflects its racing pedigree.   Sculpted in carbon fibre, the Aston team say it is the lightest and most powerful GT8 V8 Vantage ever.


Other Aston models that will be included in the NE1 Newcastle Motor Show line up are the DB9 GT, the Rapide S and the Vanquish.  All have the inimitable Aston Martin good looks and the telltale Aston engine roar.

NE1 Newcastle Motor Show Returns Bigger and Better on 9th and 10th July

From the fast and the furious to the luxurious and limited, cars of all shapes and sizes will be congregating in Newcastle for the city’s 2nd annual NE1 Newcastle Motor Show on the weekend of the 9th and 10th July.

Last year’s event put the festival on the map with Newcastle’s Grey Street taking centre stage for the festivities.  This year, the event is bigger with more exclusive exhibits and more fun and free activities for people to enjoy. To accommodate all the new elements, organisers, NE1 Ltd has extended the Motor Show to other parts of the city including the Bigg Market, Old Eldon Square, Northumberland Street and High Bridge with different activity zones mapped out across these new areas.

This year, nine of the top north east’s motoring brands will be bringing their show-stopping exhibits to the festival to be displayed in the Brand Display zone at the top of Grey Street, around Grey’s Monument.

The dealerships Aston Martin, Bentley and Porsche, Jaguar, Tesla, Infiniti, Lloyd BMW and Mill Volvo, as well as Enterprise Rent-a-car with their luxurious and unusual rental offerings, have all promised to scour their forecourts and beyond for truly remarkable vehicles for the event. Like last year, the event will give the public a rare opportunity to get up close to the cars, many previously only shown at VIP invitation-only motoring events.

In addition to the new and luxurious models, the Motor Show will provide a stage for vintage and classic vehicles which were a big hit with the public last year, these privately owned vehicles will be displayed on Grey Street where they will line both sides of the entire street.

New to this year’s line-up is an area devoted to the cult classic scooters, Lambrettas, where private owners will display their much-loved vehicles off the cobbled street on High Bridge.  Another new section, positioned on the Bigg Market, will be devoted to Modified vehicles catering for the growing interest in souped up cars like those that feature in films such as the Fast and Furious series.

Another new addition to this year’s festival is ‘Screen on the Green’, an open-air cinema that will be positioned on Old Eldon Square for the duration of the celebrations.  The large screen will broadcast the Formula 1 British Grand Prix live from Silverstone and during the breaks in the F1 action, children’s films with a car theme and classic car movies.

The event is designed to entertain the whole family, with Fanzone areas on Grainger Street providing fun, free things for young people including a treasure trail, face painting and the Doodlebug, a one off, customised blackboard car.  The old-style VW Beetle has been painted entirely with a special matt black paint so the public can leave their mark in chalk on the car.

Highlights from 2015

  • Over 100,000 people visited last year’s event.
  • The event showcased cars that had never been seen before in the region including the Aston Martin DB9 GT, on only its second outing internationally; Sebastian Vettel’s 2013 Infiniti Red Bull Formula 1 racing car and hundreds of privately owned rare, vintage and classic vehicles all displayed around Grey’s Monument and Grey Street.
  • Businesses recorded average sales increases of 43%, with some reporting triple that with business up 200% on the usual weekend trade.
  • The impact was felt wider than the immediate environs of the show with Northumberland Street enjoying a 10% increase in footfall over the course of the weekend.

NE1’s Fast Track Training Course For Chefs Culiminates With Jobs And Apprenticeships For Recruits

An innovative, fast track chef’s training course, run by NE1 Ltd in conjunction with Newcastle College and three of Newcastle’s leading restaurants, Babucho, 21 Hospitality Group and Hot Buddha Group, has reached its successful conclusion with five of the first batch of recruits walking into jobs, apprenticeships and further training for a future career in the restaurant industry.


The first course came to an end after eight weeks and organisers are already looking to enrol the next batch of recruits for the second programme starting in June.  The target number of recruits is 14, a ‘kitchen-full’ of candidates.


Two of the recruits, Diallo Mamadou and Aldair Medina have been employed in trainee roles at Babucho and will continue their formal chef’s training on an apprenticeship programme studying NVQ L2 Food Preparation and Cooking Qualification at Newcastle College.


Fat Buddha in Durham has employed another of the recruits, Liam Riley who will follow the same apprenticeship programme.


Two of the other fast track recruits Adam Henderson and Kaitlyn Milburn will continue their formal chefs training at Newcastle College on a higher level course starting in September.  The remaining candidate, is already highly qualified to Level 3 standard and is being supported by NE1 and Newcastle College in his search for work.


The fast track course has been designed to tackle the impending skills shortage in the North East restaurant industry, providing recruits with an immediate snapshot of what life is like in the career and helping them secure apprenticeships and jobs in the city’s burgeoning restaurant industry.


Attracting and training new recruits, as well as recruiting highly skilled staff, is a growing problem and one that is likely to be exacerbated this year with the opening of another 26 new restaurants in Newcastle city centre alone.


To generate interest in a career as a professional chef and to provide a direct link into employment, NE1 teamed up with three of the city’s finest restaurants, the Hot Buddha Group, Babucho, 21 Group and Newcastle College’s Lifestyle Academy to create the eight week, fast-track training course.


The first course catered for six 16 – 24 years olds and has provided intensive on-the-job training in the kitchens of the three restaurants combined with two days at college for teaching and theory lessons.   On successful completion of the course the trainees achieve their NVQ Level 1 qualification in Professional Cookery.


Aldair Medina, 20 learnt about the course through NE1’s Space 2 initiative for young people in Newcastle.  He explained:

“I’m delighted to have got the trainee job at Babucho. I’ve really enjoyed the course and the training I’ve been given and know that I’m now on track to get the formal qualifications and experience that will allow me to work in catering and hospitality anywhere.  The staff at Babucho have been really welcoming and helpful throughout the course and I’m looking forward to working with them in the restaurant.”


One of the recruits, Kaitlyn Milburn, 16 and the only woman on the course explained:

“I have always been interested in a career in catering since I was about 10 years old and used to cook with my nana.  After leaving school I started a year-long course but it was mainly college based and it felt like being back at school.  This course has been great because it is so ‘hands-on’ and I have immediately gained experience in a commercial kitchen and seen what life is really like in the industry.  Having completed the course, I’m now looking forward to continuing to work towards more professional qualifications at College.”


Bob Senior, Owner and MD of Fat Buddha restaurant said:

“We pride ourselves on our staff and we invest heavily in attracting and retaining the best – but it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract young people into the industry.  We wanted to run an on-the-job taster course that gives young people the chance to experience first hand what it is like to work in a fast-paced restaurant environment and hope that it will encourage them and others to consider a rewarding career in the industry.”


“We’ve been really impressed by the first batch of recruits on the course and were delighted to be able to offer Liam Riley a job in our Durham restaurant, he showed his determination to use this unique opportunity to his best advantage.  We hope to see many more candidates coming through the training course in the coming months.”

Exciting New Addition to NE1 Quayside Seaside This Summer

This year when NE1 Quayside Seaside returns to the banks of the Tyne, for the fifth year running, there will be an exciting new addition to the pop up beach. Subject to all the necessary planning permissions, which are still pending, Riley’s Fish Shack will take up residence on the beach for the duration of the summer holidays to add a new foodie dimension to the ever popular, NE1 Quayside Seaside.

Two converted shipping containers are to be installed alongside the beach to act as a pop up venue for Riley’s Fish Shack restaurant, which has earned a loyal following and national critical acclaim for its seafood shack on King Edward’s Bay, Tynemouth.

Riley’s at NE1 Quayside Seaside will operate on the same lines as its Tynemouth outlet selling breakfast, lunch and evening meals, and will offer their popular takeaway menu of grilled seafood wraps, stone fired flat breads and barbecued lobster – an ever changing menu depending on the catch of the day.

NE1 has been working with Riley’s founder, Adam Riley who has applied for a premises license, which would allow the ‘tackle box’ restaurant to open alongside NE1 Quayside Seaside during the summer.

Another exciting dimension to the new NE1 Quayside Seaside restaurant is Riley’s idea to offer a rotating kitchen, allowing other small North East food businesses to have the chance to showcase their foodie talents at the venue.

By combining a pop up restaurant with the pop up beach, NE1 hopes will create a destination that could be used for various events.

Adam Riley, explained:
“Riley’s Fish Shack on NE1 Quayside Seaside is a beautiful fit.  We’re still in the planning stage awaiting necessary permissions but we’re really excited, it is a great location and we’re synonymous with the beach – even if it is only temporary.  We love the idea of serving the same kind of food we’re known for on NE1’s pop up beach on the Quayside.

“We are also keen to let other start ups have a chance by exploring a rotating kitchen idea, handing over the reigns to other street food vendors.”

Adam, co-hosts the food, drink and live entertainment Boiler Shop Steamer event in Newcastle’s Stephenson Works with Matt Boyle of Wylam Brewery.

As well as the welcome new addition of the fish shack restaurant, NE1 Quayside Seaside will offer all the old favourite elements that have made the pop up beach such a welcome fixture on the Quayside over the past five years.  This year, NE1 will be on site from 27 April and the diggers will be out on 3 May building the pop up beach, which will be officially open to the public from Saturday 14 May.

Equipped with sand, palm trees and volleyball court, NE1 Quayside Seaside is hugely popular with visitors to Newcastle and with Quayside workers and families who congregate on NE1 deck chairs to enjoy lunch al fresco, a sneaky game of volleyball, or to build sandcastles.

Returning this summer are the traditional beach deck chairs, fixed chairs and barrel tables, the kids’ climbing wall together with the five beach huts in candy stripes which will be reinstated along the back wall.

NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week Results Break All Previous Records

NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week celebrated its 5th birthday in style in January with phenomenal results from all 88 participating restaurants and a £400k boost in sales.

Across the restaurants there was an average 12% rise in sales compared to NE1’s Restaurant Week in January last year with over 35K vouchers redeemed.

From Monday 18th to Sunday 24th January 88 restaurants across the city centre joined the call to take part in NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week – which creates a major buzz in the city’s restaurants at one of the traditionally quietest times of the year.

The week continues to grow in popularity and stature and the dates for August have already been set as 8 – 14 August.

Las Iguanas on Grey Street that has taken part in every NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week since it opened in Newcastle four years ago were fully booked throughout the week. The restaurant, which has two stories, had to open both floors at lunchtime to accommodate diners, an unprecedented response to the event with 1503 covers over the course of the week.

Fat Hippo, which itself celebrated its 5th birthday this January, had a huge spike in visitor numbers with over 1036 of those taking advantage of the NE Newcastle Restaurant Week offer.

The experience at both venues was echoed across all 80 plus venues participating in the event.

Commenting on the success of NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week event, Rachael Graham, General Manager of Las Iguanas said:

“The event is always a great success for Las Iguanas but this year we were sold out every day of the week. The event creates a great buzz in the city with restaurants busy and people keen to eat out at as many venues as possible.

“A mark of how successful NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week is in generating custom is that we had a full house all week, with over 1,503 cover compared to 977 people the previous week.

Matt Leatham, General Manager at the Fat Hippo Group echoed these sentiments when he said:  “We’re a busy restaurant anyway, but NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week has boosted our visitor numbers by a further 24%.

“People absolutely love NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week and it always attracts new custom.  This January has been a whirlwind for us, after the mad Christmas period we were straight back into the New Year with the Fat Hippo’s 5th anniversary.  That tied in with us winning the Chronicle’s People’s Choice award for best restaurant and NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week all made for a very busy January.  We’re now looking ahead to our new restaurant opening in Durham in April and another busy NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week this summer.”

NE1’s Space2 Expansion into New Premises with Additional Support Services for Young People

NE1’s focus on tackling youth unemployment and providing work-ready young recruits into a wide range of industry sectors has taken another step forward with the expansion of NE1’s Space2 centre for young people in Newcastle.

Space2’s new facility officially opened on Friday, 5 February with VIP guests including award winning BBC business presenter, Steph McGovern and North East author, David Almond together with an assembled audience of North East businesses and local dignitaries.

The opening took place at Space2’s new premises on Pilgrim Street in the heart of the city centre, which continues to be operated and managed by YMCA Newcastle.

Invited guests heard from Space2 members what the centre has meant to them and how it has helped them secure work, training and apprenticeships.  The guests were given a guided tour of the new premises and offered the chance to try the activities that take place at the centre.

Space2 works with young people aged 13 – 18 years old from across Newcastle.  Space2 has worked with over 3,000 young people to secure jobs, training and apprenticeships and its success has led to increased demand for its career services.

The initiative is now entering an exciting new phase three years after it first opened with a move into the bigger and better equipped building, and an expansion of its services with an enhanced career advice provision that puts Space2 members and North East businesses in direct contact with each other.

Space2 operates a unique model with local businesses funding and supporting the centre directly, a system that is both efficient and cost effective with each job, apprenticeship or training position delivered for approximately £300 in contrast to Government schemes, which can cost over £10,000 per candidate.  The scheme has gained the attention of many leading businesses and could be replicated in other parts of the country.

A full time careers advisor, Catherine Tucker has joined the Space2 team to strengthen the advice and support offered to young job seekers.

Space2’s new premises have a larger open social space, a fully equipped IT suite, dedicated multi-use performance room, music room, kitchen and four training rooms, more than double the floor space of the old Newgate Street site.

In addition to the bigger premises and the new extended careers advice service, Space2 is launching a programme of regular advice on housing and medical issues as well as introducing education sessions on the electoral system and encouraging young people to take an active part in elections.

Space2 will also be extending its volunteer program encouraging young people to gain much needed work experience.  This volunteer program extends beyond Space2 into volunteering and work experience with local businesses.

Space2 currently has over 3,000 members with membership expected to increase with the increased capacity offered by the new centre and with the new careers and advice services being offered.

NE1 Launches Free New Tinder Style Get Into Newcastle App

Tinder meets Time Out in NE1’s free Get into Newcastle App available now and free to download.  The App transforms NE1’s hugely successful what’s on and offer led website of the same name, into a fun mobile version on Apple IoS devices.

Using the much-vaunted style of dating App Tinder, the new Get Into Newcastle App allows users to swipe left or right to access or reject offer information and news about what’s on across the city.

Designed on this format, Tinder has revolutionised the world of online dating, making it easy and fun to use with a swipe left or right function to sift information quickly.  The Get Into Newcastle App operates on a similar system with events and offers presented in an easy and fun swipeable format.  Users can save or reject and share information with friends and on social media with one easy swipe.

The revolutionary format is different from existing city guides and what’s on listings.  Traditionally, these guides are simple listings or directories, which are often complicated and not intuitive to use. NE1’s new App format is set to revolutionise city-based listings platforms and NE1 anticipates it being rolled out to other cities in the future.

Visitors to NE1’s website have more than doubled in the last three years with over 60% traffic coming from mobile users.  To capitalise on this interest and in response to growing user requests for a more user-friendly mobile version, NE1 worked with Komodo Digital in Newcastle to develop the new App.

The content is constantly updated with event information, offers and listings.

NE1 Launches Fast Track Chef’s Training Course With 3 Of Newcastle’s Top Restaurants

NE1 Ltd is working with 3 of the city’s top restaurants and Newcastle College to avert an impending skills crisis in the restaurant industry in the North East. Attracting and training new recruits, as well as recruiting highly skilled staff, is a growing problem and one that is likely to be exacerbated this year with the opening of another 26 new restaurants in Newcastle city centre alone.

To stimulate interest in a career as a professional chef and to provide a direct link into three of Newcastle’s finest restaurants, NE1 has teamed up with Fat Buddha, Babucho, 21 Group and Newcastle College’s Lifestyle Academy to create a chef’s fast-track training course.

The Traineeship programme will initially cater for fourteen 16 – 24 years olds on an eight-week intensive on-the-job training course that, after successful completion, will provide an NVQ Level 1 qualification in Hospitality and is expected to lead directly into either a job, or an Apprenticeship for participants.

The course is being run by Newcastle College but will be mostly work based to ensure that candidates get a real taste for a career in the industry.

The Traineeship will launch on 8 February – the hope is that if successful, the course will be repeated with an expanded intake of trainees and the involvement of more restaurants.

After 8 weeks, the training will culminate with a showcase three-course dinner prepared by the newly trained chefs, with each restaurant and their respective trainees preparing a course to be served to an invited audience of VIP and celebrity guests at the Chef’s Academy restaurant at Newcastle College.

“The restaurant industry has been the number one growth sector in Newcastle over the past five years, helped by NE1’s Alive after Five and Restaurant Week initiatives that have boosted visitor numbers into the city and its restaurants in the early evening. This has led to an explosion in restaurant numbers and a demand for even greater numbers of staff.

“The growth in the restaurant industry in Newcastle is great news for the city, but staffing these new venues with good quality staff can be difficult. We want to offer our help to generate interest and enthusiasm in a career in hospitality and catering and create opportunities for young people to work directly with some of the city’s leading restaurants.

“We pride ourselves on our staff and we invest heavily in attracting and retaining the best – but it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract young people into the industry. We wanted to run an on-the-job taster course that gives young people the chance to experience first hand what it is like to work in a fast-paced restaurant environment and hope that it will encourage them and others to consider a rewarding career in the industry.”

NE1 Chief Executive Sean Bullick Makes Case at Number 10

Sean Bullick, Chief Executive of Business Improvement District Company, BID, NE1 Ltd was at 10 Downing Street last week (w/c 30 November) making the case to Government advisors for Newcastle, the North East and the region’s business community and to discuss opportunities that exist for city centres like Newcastle to boost economic growth.

Sean met David Cameron’s special advisor on Housing and Planning, Alex Morton, to discuss city centre investment and development, with Newcastle the primary focus.  The meeting also discussed the role of BIDs in the UK and the potential to give them a greater role nationally, with NE1 being cited as an exemplar of what can be achieved for a city with focused effort and an allocated budget.

One of the primary issues discussed was the benefits that a property owners BID would bring to the city, something NE1 is keen to explore as a means of accelerating investment, growth and revenues for Newcastle and its businesses.  This point was raised as an issue of even greater importance in light of recent Treasury changes to business rates which will allow Local Authorities to retain any monies they raise.

Currently a legislative anomaly precludes a property owner BID being established anywhere outside of London, something NE1 is keen to put right in discussion with No 10, the Department for Communities and Local Government and the Treasury.

Agreeing they would aim to meet again Sean Bullick, Chief Executive of NE1 Ltd commented:
